Rafiki (Kenya) Film Screening and Discussion
Join Us for a Movie Night and Discussion With Ben Wheeler. In February we are screening two movies with an LGBTQIA theme. These Incredible films from France and Kenya celebrate female directors and queer representation in cinema.
Rafiki is a deeply empathetic look at lesbian romance and the first Kenyan film to be selected at Cannes. It was banned upon its release at home in Kenya for “promoting lesbianism”, but when director Wanuri Kahiu successfully campaigned for the ban to be lifted for a seven-day run, it became the second highest-grossing Kenyan film of all time!
