A Call to Action Against Human Trafficking and Support for Seafarer Rights: The Human Dignity Group

Human Trafficking
The Human Dignity Group (HDG) is at the forefront of addressing critical issues related to human rights, particularly in the marine fisheries sector. They have been actively participating in international fora such as the 19th Regular Session of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission, highlighting the rights of deckhands on longline fishing boats. HDG’s dedication extends beyond advocacy, as demonstrated in their support for the wellbeing of seafarers, such as assisting in obtaining the Basic Sea Safety certificate (with support from the Sustainable Fisheries & Community Trust) and offering direct aid to those in need, like Atonimarawa Taboia, a young man who faces life-changing circumstances.

Human TraffickingBackground and Evolution of HDG:

Founded in 2021 and initially registered as a Limited company, the Human Dignity Group (HDG) has evolved into a non-government organisation with the flexibility of a company, operating without shareholding and with limited guarantee. The genesis of HDG lies with its founder, Ratu Meli Vesikula of Verata koro, Tailevu, and is an evolution from the previous company, Pacific Dialogue. Despite the passing of Ratu Meli in April 2022, his vision continues through HDG’s dedicated team, which includes four directors, a volunteer acting as an executive officer, and two contracted supporters.

HDG’s Mission and Advocacy:

HDG remains steadfast in its mission to ensure good governance, advocate for the rights of Pacific Tuna Fishery crew, raise awareness against human trafficking, and create employment opportunities for underprivileged people. HDG’s advocacy, particularly under the leadership of Dr. Patricia Kailola, EO of Human Dignity Group, has been crucial in bringing to light the abuses in the commercial tuna fishing industry. This includes addressing issues like absence of contracts, debt bondage, non-payment of fair wages, and inhumane working conditions on fishing vessels.

The core mission of HDG revolves around several key pillars:

  • Upholding good governance and the rule of law as the cornerstones of the organisation and its projects.
  • Advocating for the rights of crew members in the Pacific Tuna Fishery.
  • Raising community awareness on safeguarding against human traffickers.
  • Creating employment opportunities for underprivileged individuals or communities.

Current Focus and Activities:

HDG has primarily been engaged with the offshore fishing community, but starting January 2024, the group plans to renew its focus on human trafficking awareness and income generation, alongside continuing its support for crewmen. The organization sustains its operations through various means:
  • Making and selling handmade chocolates (based on locally-grown, Tailevu beans).
  • Selling Fiji Gift Cards and the informative book “Fiji – Just How It Is Today.”
  • Earning a percentage from contracts awarded to them.
HDG’s commitment to education and awareness is evident through their participation in events like WWF-Pacific’s webinar series on IUU-Fishing issues and local outreach programs like the presentation on Human Trafficking in Fiji to the Matanakilagi Methodist Church’s Youth Group. Their contributions have a tangible impact, from providing essential gear to crewmen for safety and comfort to supporting their families with necessities.
You can contribute to their impactful work in several ways:
